We are expanding to a mult-genre journal, beginning with our Jan/Feb issue. The title of the mag will become Munyori Literary Journal. Below are the new submission categories:

Book Reviews: These can be on any literary book by an African writer on any subject. Send a review of no longer than 2000 words. Proofread your work thoroughly.

Author Profiles: If there is an author, dead or alive, whom you think readers should know about, please send a biography-style essay of no longer than 1500 words.

Poetry: Send your high-quality poetry on any theme. Send 3 -5 polished poems (I don't do copy editing). Each poems should not be longer than 60 lines.

Interviews: If you have interviewed a writer or plan to do so, prepare and send the interview. There are no lengths requirements, and the content of the interview can cover any aspect of the writer's work or life.

Fiction: Send literary short stories of no more than 3000 words on any theme, marked "Fiction" in the subject line of your email.

Drama: Short plays are welcome; you determine what's short.

Essays: Personal narratives, scholarly essays, and/features of no longer than 2000 words.

Munyori Literary Journal is currently a non-paying market, but it guarantees you a world-wide readership. Munyori also participates in contest nominations. If we decide to nominate your work for a contest, we will inform you in writing.

First World Rights. Copyright reverts back to you upon publication.Your submission should be copied and pasted to the body of your email, or sent only as an rich text attachment.

Submissions for September/October issue

As we prepare for our next issue, we are noticing that we received a large number of submissions from writers in India. This was in response to the appearance (in our current issue) of Dr. Shaleen Kumar Singh. We are happy about this and hope that other countries will follow suit to help make Munyori Poetry Journal the international venue of writers it hopes to remain.

We are currently considering submissions for the next issue, which is scheduled for September 15. Send us poetry, essays on poetry and writing in general (not too academic), book reviews, author interviews and profiles. Remember to include a short bio and passport-size photo in .jpg format.

Sacramento Poetry Center Book Contest

The Sacramento Poetry Center (established 1979) presents The Cathy Washington Prize, its annual poetry book contest.

—Submit a manuscript of 48-70 numbered pages of original poetry in any style in English. The manuscript must not have been published previously in book form, although individual poems appearing in print or on the web are permitted. Simultaneous submissions OK, but please let us know ASAP if your manuscript has been placed with another publisher.
—Entries will be judged blind. Submitted manuscript must contain 2 title pages: Name and contact information (including email address,if possible) should appear on first title page only. Name should not appear anywhere else in the manuscript.
—Manuscript should be typed, single-spaced, paginated, and bound with a clip.
—The Sacramento Poetry Center will also consider publishing additional manuscripts from this competition.
—Check for $20.00 US per entry (multiple entries OK) should be made out to The Sacramento Poetry Center. Paid-up members of the Sacramento Poetry Center may enter the contest for a reduced fee of $15. Please note that members of SPC will not receive preferential treatment in the judging process.—Include a table of contents page and an acknowledgments page for magazine or anthology publications.
—Will read entries postmarked between January 1, 2009 and March 31, 2009.—Enclose an SASE for announcement of the winner.
—Winning manuscript will be published by The Sacramento Poetry Center. Winner will receive a prize of $1000.00 and 50 free copies of the winning book.
—Staff, volunteers, or executive board members of the Sacramento Poetry Center (or their relations) may not submit manuscripts for consideration in this contest.—Manuscripts cannot be returned.

New Issue!

The new issue of Munyori Poetry Journal will be posted on June 15. It will feature this great mix of authors: Nhamo A. Mhiripiri, Louie Crew,Thamsanqa Ncube, Siendou Konate, Felino Soriano, Jabulani Mzinyathi, Robert Hastings, Aditya Shankar, Ernest Williamson, Shilla Mutamba, Christopher Mulrooney, Gerald Bosacker, Shaleen Singh, and Gary Beck.

Almost There

It seems we have received many high-quality submissions, and we will start emailing acceptances (and rejections) to writers. In the meantime, my first poetry collection, Forever Let Me Go, is undergoing production.

I am also thinking of starting something to do with Dambudzo Marechera and I call on Dambudzo Marechera readers everywhere to give suggestions. Although there are activities planned already to celebrate Marechera's works, I feel we should do more than one international workshop once a decade.
